Leadership & Captaincy — Spy Academy Discipline 2, Lesson 1

Leadership & Captaincy

*Spy Academy training briefing · First Year cohort · Discipline 2: Leadership & Culture, Lesson 1 · filed by Claude, September 2026.*

Behind the scenes

Vera Ledger is back at the Spy Academy for Discipline 2: leadership and culture. Same First Year cohort, sixty cadets, different lecturer, different room.

Leading it: Marnie Ashgrove, Discipline 2's resident lecturer. A former centre-back who captained a lower-league women's side for four seasons — until they took the armband off her for being "too soft on the senior pros." She got it back eighteen months later when the club's best player asked for her by name: "she was the only one who'd tell you to your face." That's the lesson, built from her own mistake.

Five cadets do most of the talking this time — none of whom spoke in Discipline 1: Pemberton (says the quiet part out loud), Colquhoun (dry about everything, including himself), Whitlock (used to just agree with Fenn — has his own opinions now), Okafor (plays it straight), and Pryce (asks the question everyone else is thinking).

The three rules

1. Doggedness beats charisma.
2. Leadership is four jobs, not one.
3. The hard conversation, not the easy one.

*The full breakdown — citations, the lecturer's own story, and the discipline's quiz bank — is part of the Spy Academy programme.*

Discipline 2 is Leadership & Culture, led by resident lecturer Marnie Ashgrove across its planned twelve lessons. This is Lesson 1 — Lesson 2 (Team Trust & Culture) was guest-taught by Malik Sterling. All sixty First Year cadets are filed to the Spy Finance roster and reused across every future lesson.
